Vic: Kidsafe calls for awareness campaign after hoop death

A child safety organisation is calling for an awareness campaign about the dangersof slam-dunking and backyard basketball hoops after the death of a nine-year-old boy.

The Melbourne boy died yesterday after being hit by part of a garage wall that collapsedafter he apparently slam-dunked a basketball.

Kidsafe Victoria president ROBERT CAULFIELD says he's concerned that the tens of thousandsof basketball hoops in backyards around Australia are accidents waiting to happen.

He says people think the garage wall is safe, but it's normally only single brick, and very easily disturbed.

Mr CAULFIELD, who also heads the architects' advisory service, Archicentre, says parentsshould check existing basketball rings and warn their children about slam-dunking.
