Fed: No decision yet on war with Iraq - PM=2
Mr Howard said he still remained hopeful Iraq could be disarmed through the United Nations.
"I still remain hopeful as does the leadership of the American administration thatthe process of satisfactorily disarming Saddam Hussein will take place through the UN,"
he said.
"Using military force has only ever been a last resort as far as Australia is concerned.
"I've indicated already that naturally the defence forces are involved in some contingencyarrangements. They must do that in the event that they're called upon."
The UN was still analysing Iraq's dossier of weapons of mass destruction and no conclusionshad been arrived at, Mr Howard said.
